If you or your parents still keep old 8mm movies that play on the movie projector, and you want to copy them to DVDs. Do you know how to make it? Here I’d like to give you some suggestions.

First, you have to transfer movies in real time. In brief, you have a minimum investment of the total number of hours of film in the collection. There are companies providing this service. But I always feel like that it’s risk to send the only existing copy of anything through a shipping company. The best way to make the transfer is to use DV cameras to reshoot the image while it projects on a screen, which is very cost-effective. Here I’d like to make brief introduction as follows:

The devices for conversion are a 8mm film project, a smooth screen or white wall, a DV camera and a tripod for the camera. Please clean the projector’s screen and check if it’s dust free so that you can have the best image from the projected film. Adjust the projection lens to get as small and tightly focused as much, which could lead to the best quality image in your DV recording.

Place your DV camcorder next to the film projector at the least angle between the projector and DV camcorder. Be careful not place the projector into the vision of the DV camera. Trial run the projector for several minutes to adjust the DV camera. Zoom in the projection to try to delete as much of surrounding screen as possible from the edge of the film. Once it is done, rewind the film and re-start play. Do not move or touch the projector o the camera during the recording. Otherwise, you have to start over.

In order to get the best sound from the film connect SOUND OUT on the project to AUDIO IN on the camcorder. Many of the projectors have no an output. It’s better to separate any audio track on the film from the noise of the fan or motor in the projector. If no audio track is available with the film, use a mini-jack adapter, or just mute the DV cam audio input to delete fan noise.

After recording is finished, connect the DV camcorder to your PC and copy the recorded data to your hard disk.
